30th April 1982, A Pathetic Chapter of History Written in Blood of the 17 Dedicated Monks and Nuns of Ananda Marga

Prayer Meeting to pay homage to the 17 Monks and Nuns who were brutally killed by the anti-social elements of Communist Party (Marxists) of West Bengal-India on 30th April 1982 in broad daylight in Kolkata

People’s News Agency, Kolkata, 1 May 2005: The 30th April silent procession from Deshapriya Park to Bijan Setu (the bridge where the brutal incident happened) this year was most impressive. More than 5000 margiis coming from Orissa, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Bengal and Bhutan participated in this unique rally. Led by Whole Timer (WTs)Workers of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha, the rally was more than 2 KM long. The Silent March started exactly at 3.00 p.m. and arrived at Bijan Setu around 4.00 p.m. As the rally was to pay homage, there was no slogan shouting. Instead the mounted speakers on 6 vehicles accompanying the rally were used to narrate the story of 30th April 1982. 3 of the loud speakers were telling the same story through songs composed by Ac. Nityasatyananda Avt. (a senior monk of Ananda Marga) and sang by a group of singers. The onlookers were very curious and were asking for leaflets themselves. Now, it is 23 years and most of the people belong to generations who had never heard of such a ghastly crime.

After reaching the Bijan Setu, representatives of WTs and margiis coming from different corners offered garlands to the photographs of the departed souls. This was followed by a Prabhat Samgiita (spiritual song composed by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti, the Spiritual Master and the founder of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha), Kiirtan (Spiritual Chantings) and short Meditation. Then the Shraddhanjali (paying homage) programme with recitation of hymns. Ac. Mantrasidhananda Avt. and Ac. Tryambakeshvarananda Avt. delievered talks to remind the public of this ghastly crime committed by CPM and how the case was suppressed. Ac. Tryambakeshvarananda Avt. read from newspapers of those days - how strongly they condemned this planned and brutal murder of dedicated monks and nuns and asked for a judicial probe.

The whole programme was very impressive and emotional - especially because of songs of Ac. Nityasatyananda Avt. written especially for this occasion. Tears rolled down every body’s eyes.

Media coverage was very wide 10 newspapers printed the photographs and news. E-TV, Sonar Bangla TV shown it on their evening news telecast.

The Proutist Universal Web Team has contacted Ac. Kalyaneshvarananda Avt. the Public Relation Secretary of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha to get a brief explanation about that brutal massacre. The following paragraphs are from his explanations about that historical incident in his own language.

30th April 1982, A Pathetic Chapter of History Written in Blood of the 17 Dedicated Monks and Nuns of Ananda Marga
30th_april_3.JPG

30th April, 1982, is a day smeared with blood. On this day the Bondel Gate and the Bijon Setu area of Kolkata city was stained with the blood of 17 dedicated monks and nuns of Ananda Marga. On that day 17 monks and nuns of Ananda Marga were brutally killed by the cadres of Communist Party of India (Marxists). That is why the day of 30th April is remembered as “Dadhicii Divas” (Martyr's Day). Conscientious people of the world had condemned the massacre just immediately after the massacre but the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Jyoti Bose had not shown even slightest sympathy; he did not go to the spot which is located at five minutes walking distance from his residence. In the so-called democratic state, no criminal related to this heinous massacre got punishment till today. The communist government of the state of West Bengal kept that case totally suppressed. The real cause of their such inhuman behavior can be easily understood by reading the pages of the news papers that widely covered the massacre after it occurred. We would like to tell it very clearly that the massacre that took place on Bijon Setu and the Bondele Gate area was not committed by the public, but was organized and executed by the C.P.I. (M) party’s hired anti-social elements and it was done in a pre-planned way.

Just for achieving their heinous goal of killing the innocent members of Ananda Marga and pass it out as outburst of public outrage, the leaders of the Communist Party were spreading the rumor of child lifting around the area of Kasba of Kolkata. They have circulated the rumor to all the schools in that area that Ananda Margiis are the child lifters. Even when these rumors have reached an extreme stage, the government under the chief minister-ship Jyoti Bose did not take any step against those rumor mongers. But the then Commissioner of Kolkata police, Nirupam Som and S.P. of 24 Parganas in a joint statement expressed to the media – “No child is reported to be kidnapped in Kolkata and 24 Parganas. There is no case of child lifting from any school in both the districts.” Not only that, the Director General of West Bengal Police also confirmed that there was no FIR (First Information Report) regarding child lifting in any part of West Bengal.

It was only due to the clear instruction of Jyoti Bose’s Party that Police did not reach place of massacre, even when the place is just 10 minutes walking distance from the nearest Police Station and massacre was going on for more than an hour. The Kolkata Police, not only played an inactive role, they were actually abetting the crime.

The conspiracy against Ananda Marga was well planned. Not only that C.P.I (M) leaders of West Bengal were constantly spreading the rumors against Ananda Marga in a very shrewd and organized manner for sometime before the massacre, an emergency meeting was also held by the leaders of Communist Party of West Bengal in Ananda Bharati Institute hall before a few days. The daily news paper of the Communist Party, “Ganashakti” printed the photos and the news about that meeting. The main agenda of that meeting was how to destroy Ananda Marga. In this way, they created congenial circumstances for destructive plans for killing the innocent Ananda Margiis. By killing the 17 monks and nuns in broad daylight - burning them alive on Bijon Setu and Bondel Gate area on 30th April of 1982, the Communists of West Bengal wrote the century’s most pathetic history by the blood of 17 dedicated monks and nuns of Ananda Marga.

Why this opposition?

Is it just because Ananda Marga gives a very rational concept about the existence of God and the Communists are atheists and materialists? Or there may be some other reasons involved? The founder of Ananda Marga and the Beloved Marga Gurudeva Shrii Shrii Anandamurtijii also known as Shrii P. R. Sarkar has given a Socio-Economic concept called Progressive Utilization Theory (PROUT). PROUT in a clear language exposes the destructive effects of defective concepts like Communism and Capitalism. Not only that, it gives a very scientific solution to all social, political and economic crises of human society. It gives a very psychological method of establishing one human society based on the principles of Neo-Humanism where there will be no chances of exploitations and corruptions. The communists are scared and panicked as Ananda Marga spread so fast in each and every villages of West Bengal, India and all over the world. Their fear was that if Ananda Marga ideology is widely accepted by the common mass, one day their defective and destructive ideology will meet its doom. So the opposition between Ananda Marga and the communists is the ideological opposition.

On 7th May 1982, under the column of “Priya Sampadak” (Dear Editor) of a famous Bengali Daily News paper named “Aj Kal” Shrii Ksetra Prasad Sensharma wrote that so long the massacre was taking place the whole Lalbajar (the Police Headquarters) could be assembled there. But Lal Bajar did not organize any anticipatory measures and those who were assembled there were the well-prepared mass of hired goons of the Communist Party of India (Marxists). They have chosen Kasba, their strong political base as the safe place to kill the dedicated monks and nuns of Ananda Marga.

But Ananda Marga could not be destroyed. Ananda Marga today is not just in Kolkata, West Bengal or India but has taken a shape of the way of life for the people of 190 countries around the world. It is a well-known fact that whenever any Great personality came forward for the welfare of human beings, he had to go through the tremendous tortures at the hands of the evil forces. So it is quite natural that the extremely materialistic and atheist organization like C.P.I. (M) opposed and is still opposing Ananda Marga. But they are unsuccessful to stop the propagation of Ananda Marga’s economic, social, spiritual - in short a comprehensive ideology of life. Rather Ananda Marga is marching ahead to establish its noble goal of Universal Fraternity. Whatever effort the anti Ananda Marga forces like communists will make to destroy Ananda Marga by spreading rumors like Child lifters, communal force etc., Ananda Marga will certainly establish its goal of establishing the comprehensive ideology of life on this earth. 30th April is the day of taking collective oath. Ananda Marga gives a clarion call to all to come forward to pay our deepest salutation to the 17 monks and nuns who had sacrificed their lives for the sake of this noble ideology. Let us be determined and organized to accelerate the process of welcoming a New Dawn by dispelling the Cimmerian darkness through which the human society has been passing through for ages.

Few Questions are expected to be answered by the Communists of West Bengal

Just after the massacre, the Government of West Bengal led by the then Chief Minister Jyoti Bose had given a statement that public had done that massacre by being agitated because of the activities of Ananda Marga. In relation to the above statement, we would like repeat some questions to them which are not answered by them even until today.

  • Early in the morning when people were supposed to go out for peaceful morning walk or with the shopping bags to the market, instead of that the “public” were waiting with weapons like iron rods, crowbars, knives and petrol. How long you will force your public to believe this?
  • The communist leaders were spreading organized rumors against Ananda Marga as “Child Lifters”; being the chief minister, Mr. Jyoti Bose, why you did not issue any statement to make people conscious about the baseless rumors like that?
  • Just before the massacre, communist cadres did extensive Wall Writing against Ananda Margiis to heat up the situation as the preparatory step for organizing the massacre. Mr. Bose, was it unknown to you? Was it not your responsibility as the Chief Minister of the state to take any step against it?
  • Just before the massacre, the leaders of the communist party organized an emergency conference just to prepare for the massacre. Was it unknown to you Mr. Bose? If not, then being chief minister of the state, why you did not take any anticipatory measure to stop the killings of the innocent monks and nuns?
  • After the massacre, when the members of Ananda Marga were constantly organizing protests against the murderers in a democratic manner and demanding justice – Jyoti Bose had given a statement that if 10,000 cadres of his party under the leadership of Sachin Sen (then General Secretary of C.P.I (M) of West Bengal state) counters the Ananda Margiis vehement propaganda– what will happen? Was it the statement of a chief minister or the “Cold Brained” leader of killers, who had directed the whole episode of killing of 17 monks and nuns from behind the curtain?

  • When the massacre was taking place, if the government wanted to stop it, they could bring the whole police force from entire ‘Lal Bazar’ (the state police Headquarters). But even when the Police Station was just 10 minutes walking distance from the spot of massacre, no police came on the spot to save the victims. Why Jyoti Bose being the police minister and chief minister did not ask any explanation from the concerning police officers? Why public have no right to know this?

  • The then O.C. of Tiljala and the D.G. of West Bengal gave a statement that there were no case of ‘child Lifting’ not only in the Tiljala area but also in the whole West Bengal state, even after that why the then chief minister Jyoti Bose did not take any step to protect the lives of the Ananda Margiis?

  • The Additional District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas District of that time when the massacre took place was Mr. Sher Singh. His wife Mrs. Surinder Kaur in 1998 had stated by submitting a case in Calcutta High Court (case number: 18698/W/98) that her husband knew the names of the murderers of the 17 monks and nuns of Ananda Marga. When there was a good chance of revealing the secret information, why the goodwill of her was not materialized?

  • The day when the massacre took place, Jyoti Bose used to live in his Hindustan Park residence. Even after such a brutal killing he did not come to the spot of killing which is just 10 minutes walking distance from his house to convey a verbal condolence to Ananda Marga, why? What was so urgent for him to leave Kolkata just immediately after the massacre?

  • Ananda Margiis were demanding for an enquiry into the matter by an independent body headed by a justice of Supreme Court. Why Jyoti Bose did not recommend for such enquiry to the central government? In his own State such a barbaric massacre had taken place and as chief minister was it not his responsibility to facilitate proper investigation into the matter? Why did he not have that good will?

We (Ananda Margiis) will be very happy to get the answers of the above questions from the Leftist Government of West Bengal. But we know that they (leaders of the Communist Party of India – Marxists) will never like to give the answers. The reason for that is known to all. So we would like to appeal to all to come forward and build up a front to fight against all sorts of inhuman atrocities being done by the Left Front Government of West Bengal. Let us be aware that “Capitalism makes a man beggar and communism makes a man beast.” Let’s get organized to save the human society from the unbearable suffering caused by the defective philosophies like ‘Communism’, ‘Capitalism’ and all sorts of dogma-centered philosophies and accelerate the process of establishing the new socio-economic concept of PROUT which is based on the principles of universal love and ‘Neo-Humanism’
