Mass fast call from Mamata

Statesman News Service, KOLKATA/ KRISHNANAGAR, Dec. 9 - Miss Mamata Banerjee has appealed to the people of Bengal to join mass fasting tomorrow to commemorate seven days of fasting by members of Singur Krishi Jami Banchao Committee.

She said the mass fasting will begin tomorrow from 10 a.m. in the morning. "I'm appealing to the people to join us in mass fasting tomorrow and arrangement will be made near our stage so that people can sit for mass fasting. You may fast for four hours or six hours depending on your health. The fast will continue till 8 p.m.," she said.

Miss Banerjee also requested to the crowd who gathered today in front of the stage to bring all their relatives and friends on Monday at 1 p.m. near the dais to gather for mass movement against police atrocities against farmers at Singur, CPI-ML supporters and media persons. She said from tomorrow her party workers will be on roads for signature campaign against police atrocity, imposition of Section 144 at Singur and acquisition of multi-crop agricultural land for industrialisation. She said similar Save Farmland Committees will be set up at Bhangar, Nandigram, Haldia and Singur, where the government is making a move to acquire land for industrialisation.

Miss Banerjee said that she did not reject the chief minister’s appeal to end hunger strike and engage in a dialogue in this issue. She said she sent the letter to chief minister’s office at 2.55 p.m. yesterday. The letter stated that she was willing to enter into a dialogue with the chief minister if Section 144 is call off in Singur and land acquisition stopped. She also said that she has written to the Speaker, LokSabha, to excuse her from attending office.

Meanwhile, a group of 15 Trinamul Youth Congress leaders headed by the organisations Santipur block president Mr Saikat Das have initiated an indefinite fast from today in front of the Fulia rail station in Nadia over the Singur issue.
