The Nepal Episode - Political Hypocrisy of India

By Ac. Krtashivananda Avadhuta

In tune with the Indian government some Indian media people are raising their voice for restoration of democracy in Nepal. As if Indian Government is too concerned for democracy. On 14th February in a speech the foreign secretary [of India] Shyam Saran said, “we want the whole South Asia to become a flourishing democracy" and in his opinion that is the only guarantee of peace and development. Hollow slogans from South Bloc are common to hoodwink the people, but realities contradict the slogans.

India's love for Communist Russia was so deep that when Soviet tanks invaded Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968, and Afganistan in 1980 they did not hesitate to extend lavish support. They nourished the LTTE till the assassination of Rajeev Gandhi. Instead of supporting Aung San Su Ki of Burma, South Bloc doesn’t hesitate to support the Burmese generals who in every step are strangulating so called democracy.

When last year the King of Nepal dismissed the elected government and nominated a civil government of his own choice, India remained silent. And when this year on 1st Feb. the King dismissed the nominated (not elected) government which was most corrupt and inefficient, India stopped military aid to Nepal. Britain followed the suit and America endorsed it.

Maoist started their war in 1956 when civilian government was in power in Nepal. They were fighting against the feudal character and corruption of the government. Then last year they said that they don't want to talk with the nominated government but want to sit in the table with the King. Now they want a republic without the King. These Maoists are another form of Taliban and it will be folly to trust them.

South bloc claims that the Communist party of Nepal and the Maoist are not in real sense revolutionary they simply want land reform and Indian intelligence claim to have restored link with the Maoists.

India wants to teach a lesson to the King and they are instigating the Maoists. It is a matter of question from where the Maoists of Nepal received money and arms when they claim that they don't trust China, neither have they had any link with China. They also said their goal is not only to liberate Nepal but its border also. It is obvious that this folly of India, Britain and America will help the Maoists. And also it is obvious from the past record that India or Americas support to other states did not depend upon the nature of the government (dictatorial or democratic). Then what is the cause to adopt a policy to teach the King a lesson?

Nepal's economy is controlled by the economic tycoons of India and they are very unpopular in Nepal. Anti Indian sentiment is quite strong in Nepal, similar to anti-West India capitalist sentiment in Bengal. Now the Maoists control about 3/4th of the rural area in Nepal. Nepalese army is not ideologically equipped to counter this attack. It appears that India have a deal with Prachanda, the Maoist commander and wants to install a puppet government like before to please the economic tycoons of India. As Nepal is feudal country, any show of democracy will be a farce. In present state of anti Indian sentiment in Nepal no government can survive if it is branded as puppet of India and unfortunately that is what India wants. India is playing with fire. Such hypocrisy of India should be exposed. --------------
