National News Service, Kolkata, 14 September 2005: Mamata Banerjee led a huge rally today in Kolkata. It is estimated one lakh (100,000) Trinamool Congress supporters joined todays "Maha Michil" (Grand Rally) which originated from Raja Subodh Mallick Square to Dharmatolla in Central Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee, Pankaj Banerjee, Mukul Roy, Sovandeb Chatterjee addressed the rally. Mamata Banerjee said she will resist the nexus between the CPI(M) and the international promoters, like the Salem Group of Indonesia. Kolkata witnessed huge anti left sentiment following todays "Maha Michil".
This is considered as a great step in the political revival of Trinamool Congress and its leader Mamata Banerjee.
After the NDA lost power in the Centre and Trinamool failed to dislodge CPI(M) in the last West Bengal Assembly election, many had predicted the political demise of Mamata Banerjee. The steps taken by the CPI(M) in the name of industrilazation has angered not only the other partners of the left front, but also many poor farmers who were the mainstay of the CPI(M) party.

"Human beings have still not been able to form a human society, and have still not learned to move with the spirit of a pilgrim. Although many small groups, motivated by self-interest, work together in particular situations, not even a small fraction of their work is done with a broader social motive. By strict definition, shall we have to declare that each small family unit is a society in itself? If going ahead in mutual adjustment only out of narrow self-interest or momentary self-seeking is called society, then in such a society, no provision can be made for the disabled, the diseased or the helpless, because in most cases nobody can benefit from them in any way... in that case there always remains the possibility of some people getting isolated from the collective. All human beings must attach themselves to others by the common bond of love and march forward hand in hand; then only will I proclaim it a society." |
