Agartala, February 11: Altogether seven Congress candidates were kidnapped by CPI (M) [Communist Party of India, Marxist - eds.] cadres during the past one- week to ensure victory of the party in the coming Village Committee elections [in the northeast Indian state of Tripura - eds.].
The abductions are aimed to create panic among the party candidates, workers and supporters, Leader of the Opposition Ratan Lal Nath told reporters at a press conference on Friday.
He alleged that the ruling party has been making the election process farce in the name of installing democracy at the grass root level.
He said that a three-member delegation of the party submitted a memorandum to the State Chief Election Commissioner and complained that altogether 567 nominations of Congress party were intestinally cancelled to give mileage to the ruling party.
The condition in most of the blocks of state has worsened due to threats posed by the ruling party and the entire block BDOs as well as returning officers are working at the behest of the CPI (M) leaders, alleged Nath.
He also informed that as many as 32 party supporters were seriously injured by the CPI (M) cadres during the past two week.
Acting on complaint, SEC GSG Ayyengar asked the Returning Officers to re-check cancelled nominations.
This is for the first time in the history of electoral battle in the state; cancelled nominations were re-checked following the directive by the SEC.

He also informed that as many as 32 party supporters were seriously injured by the irate attacks of CPI (M) party.
