KOLKATA, July 25: Governor Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi criticised jewellery advertisements and said that such advertisements had an adverse effect on the minds of people from the lower-middle class.

He also flayed the portrayal of women in advertisements for cosmetics and encouraged NGOs to do something about it.

The Governor was speaking at the launch of Prof Suparna Gooptu’s, book ~ Cornelia Sorabji, India’s Pioneer Woman Lawyer.

The book is a biography of the first woman to study at Oxford and join the civil services in British India as the Lady Legal Advisor to the Court of Wards.

The book focuses on the trials and tribulations of a pioneer who had to break into a predominately male-dominated world. Giving the example of Cornelia, who struggled in a male-dominated society, Mr Gandhi said that intellectual subordination has a corrosive effect on society. [Source: The Statesman]
