Statesman News Service, KOLKATA, Aug. 8: A 34-year-old housewife was allegedly beaten to death by her husband in Muchipara when she refused to give in to his persistent demands for dowry.

The victim's elder brother lodged a complaint with police today, but her husband is at large.

According to reports, Sima Aich had been admitted to NRS Medical College and Hospital on 2 August, after being severely beaten up by her husband, Mr Gopal Aich, who is employed with Food Corporation of India (FCI).

Gopal reportedly told Sima’s family members and the doctors at the hospital that his wife’s injuries had been caused by an accidental fell from the stairs of the couple’s 9, Crouch Lane residence.

Sima’s family lives in Midnapore. Her elder brother reached Kolkata on Sunday and learnt the true cause of his sister’s injuries after he met her at the hospital.
Shortly afterwards, he went to the Muchipara police station to lodge a complaint, but could not do so. Sima died last evening.

Angry locals and Sima’s elder brother went to the Muchipara police station once again today and an FIR was eventually lodged. But Gopal had escaped by then.

“The accused is at large. Our search for him is on. The couple were married for about 12 years and have a daughter,” an officer at the Muchipara police station said. (Source: The Statesman, Kolkata)
