"Throughout the history of mankind there have been murderers and tyrants; and while it may seem momentarily that they have the upper hand, they have always fallen." (Mahatma Gandhi)

The United States has discarded pretensions to international legality and decency, and embarked on a course of raw imperialism run amok." (William Rockler, Nuremberg Tribunal prosecutor)

Hindu power politics

by Romain Maitra, Calcutta

For the Hindus, eight centuries of Muslim invasions were a historic humiliation. They led to an antagonism that was further whipped up by the political manipulations of the British. The Hindu reform movements of the 19th and 20th centuries , closely tied to Indian nationalism and the struggle for independence, were about redefining Hinduism and constructing a national identity.

More Than 40,000 Protest Bush in Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - Tens of thousands of Turks chanting anti-Bush slogans demonstrated against the president's visit to their country on Sunday and a NATO summit.

Bush is unpopular in Turkey, where the overwhelming majority of the public opposed the Iraq war. As the president arrived in Turkey Saturday, supporters of Jordanian-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said they kidnapped three Turkish workers in Iraq, Arab TV station al-Jazeera reported. The group has threatened to behead the hostages, an al-Jazeera employee told The Associated Press.

by Lynn Heinisch. Like some Sudanese Muslims in Darfur, Kahouma Abdelmula Abdalla wears a leather necklace with five small boxes containing verses from the Koran. The necklace is meant to protect the wearer. Hers also holds two keys – to the house where she and her family were living when the militia destroyed her village. Her husband, shot by the attackers, wore matching keys for the house that his killers burned that day.

Jun 22 - A last minute spending spree by the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) and language in the UN Security Council resolution setting the conditions for Iraqi sovereignty appear likely to limit the interim government’s ability to exercise meaningful control over the country’s oil revenues.

According to documents posted on its own web site, the CPA’s little-known Program Review Board (PRB) has quietly committed billions of dollars in Iraq’s oil revenues to new contracts that critics say will enrich US and British corporations while limiting the amount of revenue Iraq’s new interim government will have at its disposal when it assumes authority from the CPA on June 30.

How much worse does it need to get here before the occupiers consider changing their policy? One hundred dead every day? In light of what happened here yesterday, it appears as though we’re heading in that direction. For those of you who think June 30th will signify a decrease in the number and magnitude of attacks against the occupation forces after the “transfer of sovereignty” -- think again.

IAR’s Rodrigo Guevara reports: Otto Reich, a political thug eternally implicated in secret CIA networks to overthrow President Hugo Chavez, and outgoing Special Envoy to Latin America for the Bush administration, recently told the BBC that the White House would like to see the Venezuelan President out of power. As the man responsible for State Department Latin American policy, Otto Reich was the lead proponent of the April 2002 coup d’etat that briefly ousted Chavez. Reich collaborated with the Miami Cuban-American mafia and the coup-leading media mogul Gustavo Cisneros. Now, they wish history to repeat itself.

DHAKA : Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong has urged the leaders of the moderate Muslim nation to open up the country's economy to attract foreign investment and also to play a leading role in the fight against terrorism.

It is the first time a head of government from Singapore has visited Bangladesh, and Mr Goh hopes his visit will help stimulate bilateral cooperation and lift relations to a higher plane.

His vision was shared by Bangladesh.

PROUT Editor's note: We need to ask the question, in what country, anywhere in the world, do we have a leader who genuinely cares for the little people - the term used in the article below. If no leader represents the little people, then there is something wrong with the election system and there is something wrong with the educational system. Elections should not be about money and manipulation, cunning conniving, and careful construction of images to hoodwink the little people. Elections should not be about empty promises never performed. Elections should be about 4-10 candidates, all of whom have a long track record of fighting for justice for the little people. When such candidates can run in elections, when people shun the professional politicians, then we will know that we have real political democracy.

JAKARTA : Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri faces an uphill battle for re-election next month despite belated attempts to re-connect with the "little people" who once supported her so fervently, analysts say.

Efforts to shed her aloof and taciturn image by visiting markets and appearing for television interviews have failed to win much public favour and have even exposed her shortcomings, they said.

Indonesians will for the first time vote for their president directly on July 5. A run-off will be held on September 20 if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote.

People Shocked at Threat to Hostage

by O Young hee, Korea Herald

Prout Editor's note: It is indeed shocking and sad that one Korean man may lose his life. Similarly, G.W. Bush, John McCain and other US government politicians are decrying the 'barbarians' who are beheading/executing Americans and their supporters. However, it is umpteen times more shocking, more tragic that 20,000-30,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed, wounded, that the body parts of small children lie scattered all over the roads, that Iraqi women civilians are being raped by US soldiers, that the air, soil and water of Iraq is now contaminated with depleted uranium dust for centuries into the future. And what was the crime of these 20-30,000 Iraqi civilians? Their only 'crime' was that they had the misfortune to be born in a land that has oil. If the United Nations had any moral integrity, if the UN truly represented the voice of the common people around the world, it would immediately file charges against G.W. Bush for crimes against humanity - at the ICJ in Hague and at the ICC in Rome. If the UN had any moral spine, it would send a world military force to combat and remove US invading forces. Since they are not going to do this, since the UN has no courage to stand up to the imperial aggression of the US, this means, it is time for people everywhere to work for a world government that will fight for justice, that will fight for all the little people in this world.

On Sunday, June 20, a U.N. peacekeeping mission led by Brazil will take over command authority in Haiti from U.S. forces, which have witnessed an alarming deterioration of the political and economic situation on the island in recent weeks.

The ongoing chaos highlights the hapless leadership of Prime Minister Gerald Latortue and his Rasputin-like Justice Minister Bernard Gousse, as well as the persistence of a host of unanswered questions about the ambience of violence surrounding FebruaryÕs forced transfer of power and Aristide's flight into exile.

U.S. Trucks Carrying Radioactive Materials Intercepted In Iraq-Kuwait Border TEHRAN (MNA) -– The UAE-based daily Al-Khaleej reported on Monday that Kuwaiti tariff officials have intercepted a truck loaded with radioactive materials in the Iraq-Kuwait border. The daily quoted informed sources as saying that the radioactive control team from Kuwait’s Health Ministry discovered that one of the trucks belonging to the U.S.-led coalition forces was carrying heavy radioactive materials trucks. The trucks were headed for Iraq. The daily said that such materials could only enter a country when there is permission from related bodies while the materials were secretly being carried to Iraq. Security forces stressed that no contamination had been caused by the material. The MNA reported for the first time the coalition forces’ suspicious transfer of WMD parts from Kuwait to Southern Iraq by trucks. The possible presence of WMD in Iraq and its likely nuclear programs were the main U.S. pretext for attacking the country. However, their failure to find weapons of mass destruction in the country and the continuing turmoil in Iraq questioned the legitimacy of the U.S. war against Iraq and their presence in the country.
