Here is a simple chronology of the evolution of humanism, a concept found in early Greek civilization that grew during the Roman Empire and continued to evolve over the centuries until the 20th century where some say it died, or converted to anti-humanism as a result of the writings of Sartre, Nietsche and Heidegger among other existentialists. Zagorin proposes a new kind of humanism wherein the focal point is fundamental human rights. Sarkar proposes a still more revolutionary form of humanism which redefines it as Neo-Humanism for the 21st century, with its focal point being the devotional principle, the mindset that we value not only humans but all living beings and even the geological crust of the earth. To achieve this Neo-Humanist mindset, a complete transformation in the heart of humanity is required.
